The medical term for night sweats is ‘sleep hyperhidrosis.’ Sleep hyperhidrosis is described as being episodes of sweating during nighttime, which can range from mild to profuse.

Night sweats are the hot flushes you get at nighttime. Sometimes these episodes can be so intense so as to interrupt a woman’s sleep, which can leave her tired and affect other aspects of her life. Other symptoms of night sweats include sudden heat, irregular heartbeat, nausea, chills and headaches. These episodes can happen frequently or infrequently and range from mild to severe symptoms.

Science can’t properly explain why they occur but there is a range of things you can do to lessen their severity. Research has shown that they occur more frequently if you are dressed too warmly, after eating spicy foods and after drinking hot liquids. Keeping the temperature low and dressing in layers both help manage your fluctuating body temperatures.

Natural Remedies

Some natural remedies can work such as ginseng; kava, red clover and vitamin E have all had good reports with regards to treating the symptoms of menopause hot flushes.

Use Your Mind-Body Connection

Women have also seen improvement by doing mind-body techniques such as meditation or Tai Chi. These techniques will improve and increase your health and general well being. Tai Chi in particular is the perfect form of exercise for someone going through a life transition. The movements are slow and fluid which gently encourages supple joints and ease of movement. This is ideal for someone in their third age who has a body that needs maintenance rather than increase. Preserving muscularity is also important for someone in his or her later years.

Invest in Sleepwear & Manchester That Works

In the short-term, invest in some moisture-wicking sleepwear and sheet sets. Moisture-wicking fabrics lift the water from your skin and evaporate it into the air. This is unlike cotton, which will absorb the water but will hang onto it and become sodden. There are few things worse than having to get up in the night to change the sheets of your bed; especially if you share your bed.

With the right health approach and the correct fabric, you should be able to manage this stage and get back to a lovely, peaceful uninterrupted nights sleep.
